Critique responses- Text heavy

Click “read more” to see my responses to all the critiques that I got in my ask box! Please feel free to send me more critiques if you feel something has been overlooked~

TL;DR versions what I learned from my critiques:

-need more variation in faces and expressions, more notably the shapes of the nose

-Draw out of my comfort zone: Animals, buildings, environments, creatures etc

-watch out for tegaki comments that are a little bit too vague, sketchy, and slopped together.

-Draw out of my comfort zone: animals, creatures, backgrounds etc

-more dramatic posing

-change up my color palette, be more mindful of variation of materials. Tone down the plastic look

Wulf: I absolutely love your coloring style! Its swift and not necessarily “omg neat” and that is FANTASTIC. It gives a lot of personality to your work. Your people style is very original! Your shading skills are fantastic as well. Its great how you can take a sketch and turn it into something that looks 3D. As for more things, try beasts! animals! Machinery! :) Anything to expand your already phenomenal portfolio. I would like to see more character design as well! -Wulf

-Awhh thanks Wulf, you are such a sweety <3. Agreed! Definitely need to pull out some animals and creatures- I always try to avoid these things like the plague. You aren’t the first person to tell me that my stuff looks like it’s 3D- I always find that remark fascinating because I don’t see that aspect…hmm!  Character design is fun, I think I’m pretty weak in that area for sure.

Slimmercat: When you do color something fully, your color choice is pretty fantastic. I wish a little bit that your poses were a bit more dynamic (a lot of your people feel very stiff and posed, without weight), but overall those are pretty nice, too, when you decide you want to put effort into them. Your style itself is really beautiful, and the way you stylize faces would be fantastic if you would try pushing the envelope on exaggeration/variation a bit more!

It seems like, when you shade things (black and white or color), everything is made out of plastic, for lack of a better description? Skin is a bit too shiny, and every material is shaded very nearly the same way, regardless of how matte or reflective it is. Also I think you have about one nose that you draw on absolutely everyone, with zero variation— you might want to try different, more varied features! (Then again, I personally put a LOT of stock in interesting/varied faces, so that may just be me)

I feel really pretentious trying to crit /you/ of all people, you’re already so fantastic, but I figured since you asked I’d just give you my opinion. I hope you get out of your art rut soon, zo! You’re great to begin with, but you could be so much greater, and I’m excited to see it happen. <3

-Yeah totally agree with the posing issue, lets note here that putting any effort into my work has been a huge chore for me as of late. It’s so hard to do when you feel so art slumpy, bluh bluh~  (hardly an excuse- just a tyupical woe-is-me statement). Variation on faces? agreed- I’m having a really difficult time with faces, expressions, NOSES!!! Noses for sure, I absolutely understand the nose thing. I even register that I’m drawing the same nose, and I almost feel helpless while doing it LOL.

Let me just put it out there for everyone, the ‘plastic’ look is completely and utterly done on purpose. I do it because I like how it looks, it’s odd and very exaggerated. I know that doesn’t make it right by any means just because I do it on purpose but yeah.  I agree completely that I need to jump out of my box on that one though, I need to try other things and branch out as far as coloring, shading, and modeling of light sorces and be sensitive to the materials being rendered.

and lol, you only did what I asked~ If you hadn’t given me your complete and honest opinion I would of been pretty upset actually. That goes for anyone, I don’t want to be lied to- and more times than not I know when you are lying to me.  So thanks for that!

Anonymous: your art is rad and great but there’s few things that irritates me about it:

1. same noses on every character. it’s not same-faces, the faces differ just fine, it’s NOSES idk maybe it’s just me?

2. rough-looking linearts - especially your TE comments, what is that doodles, where’s great comments art? awesome coloring saves it all ofcource, but most of the time it looks like you don’t like what you’re drawing or just lazy?

anyway I love your art, I love when you try different things and draw something out of your comfort zone like that last doodle you posted. so I guess I’m just envy you or something. stay cool and don’t mind rude anons like myself :P

-As stated above, it’s not just you! Even I am self-aware of the nose blunder that I keep doing over and over and over.

I am actually going to disagree on this one a little. I think I put in a near perfect amount of effort in tegaki comments (perfect meaning, not too long or not to short time wise). I refuse to spend over 20 minutes on any one comment, why?  because it’s a waste of time to me. Tegaki comments are fun warm ups, gestural on purpose- and the loose sketchy look enables me to be more dynamic sometimes with posing.  Not saying this is the case all of the time, specially comments made recently- they are a little to vague and ‘lazy’ as you would call it, I agree.  I mean A lot of my comments are pretty atrocious…I’m definitely going to try to be more mindful to that, and try to be a little more clean. My goal in tegaki, in any case, is to get the point across with minimal effort- while having fun. I’m not sure if that’s the best attitude or not, but that’s typically how I roll as far as tegaki is concerned.  Don’t get the wrong message here though, I absolutely love tegaki- I love rping on tegaki- I love everything about tegaki, but hell if I’m going to put my time into completely polished works on tegaki.

You are definitely not being rude at all, thank you so much for your insite!

Cheeseborger: Yea, I don’t have anything really useful to say because I like pretty much everything about your style. This is why I commissioned you. I hope it doesn’t bother you that I reblogged your post for my own purposes.

-Ughh thank you so much! And I don’t mind that you reblogged my post at all, that goes for anyone that wants to reblog it to get critiques!

Anonymous: Re: Art Critique- I’d love to see you put more emphasis on your setting and backgrounds for your characters. Sometimes you surprise us on tegaki with beautiful backgrounds (im thinking of the one you did with Thrall and the train, Asher at his desk) and those really come out just looking gorgeous. I think you rely too much on your sketchy-line-art-half-covered-backgrounds ala leyendecker. That Edith picture, for example, probably would be just as fine with a solid background; the busy extra lines detract from it being such a simple peaceful portrait. They’re just too energetic. And your method of painting usually ends up very heavy, very dark, very somber; you favor strong, dark, saturated palettes. It’s consistent and it’s your style, so that doesn’t make it wrong, please let me say. But shake it up and maybe force yourself to do an entire painting in pastels? That would be unusual. :)

Backgroundsss!! HSSSSSSSSsss~!!!   and DAMN, you caught me- you found me out. I hide blunders and create a ton of shortcuts in my art with sketchy lineart and colorful blocked out leyendecker ‘cut out’ backgrounds.

Color palette mix-up! I will try! I need a change! FOR SURE! ahh pastels, /what are those/

ps- pretty sure i know who wrote this critique. /eyezoom 8U
